Our Digital Photo World

Today we got a package from a customer in the mail. It was a series of photos she wanted to post on her website. It got me thinking, there are actually people in this world that are not completely emerged in the digital world.

Being a web/graphic designer, I live, breathe and work on the computer. From 7ish in the morning to 9ish at night, I could spend easily 12 of those hours on a computer, yikes! So it is easy to see how I could think everyone would be like me ;)

But I think back to just nine or so years ago, when I was still using 35mm film to shoot photography. I went to France and England for my senior trip, it was a blast, but I was limited by the amount of film I could fit in my purse (and that I wanted to carry around). I would have taken 1,000 pictures instead of the 100 that I did take. Had I had a digital camera then, I probably would have actually done something with my photos, possibly printing them and framing them for my living room (despite my husband thinking I have enough French influence already….). Not to mention I could have looked in my view finder and see that my picture of the Mona Lisa didn’t turn out, and I could have taken another.

One of the ten pictures of me as a child. As you can tell, I was into high fashion, even as a tike.

The opposite would be the fact that I have inundated myself with too many photos. I compare the 10 or so photos I have of myself (one of the them to the right) on Polaroid and faded prints to the literally 1,000s of pictures I have taken of my daughter. Now I have to have an external hard drive in which to store all these photos, including originals, touched up photos and finals of these photos.

Despite the fact that is ten times the amount of work, I would never go back. I do wonder if sometime in my life, film will be completely dead, if we can get everyone to come over to our digital world? Will my child, grandchildren think I am some old foggie with my SLR camera, I wonder what the future holds for photography…
